Wonder Woman 1984 star explains how showjumping helped prepare her for role

The girl from the UK who plays a young Diana in the upcoming Wonder Woman film said she had been able to perform much of her stunts in the blockbuster with her history.

When she shoot Wonder Woman in 1984, Lilly Aspell, 13, was just nine, but she said she was willing to do as much physical work in the job as possible, including wirework and horse racing.

The actress, who was born in Scotland, is the protagonist in the film's action-packed opening sequence, as a young Diana plays in the Amazonian Games at Themyscira Island.

She told the PA News Agency "I did most of my stunts and some I couldn't do my spectacular double stunt did them, I did a great job, but that doesn't mean I wasn't up!

"Showjumping is a very very, very costly activity, and I wasn't as fortunate as most people in the showjumping, so I had to fight for it.

"When I started showjumping, I was four or five and I've been riding since I could talk.

"I love both them (acting and riding), I love them so much, both careers so it's an incredible experience to combine them."

Aspell, who starred in flashbacks in Wonder Woman 2017, was spotted as a six-year-old, shopping with her mum, for her looks of star Gal Gadot.

She said: "I was in London and it was fate, we were shopping and my first movie was Wonder Woman."

"It's really weird to watch it back, also the first Wonder Woman my mother put on it, and she just yells every time she plays it because she's so proud.

"It's so strange to look at my younger self and since the first Wonder Woman there are so many things that have improved and the second film I've had a bit more experience under my girdle."

Aspell said she took tips from Gadot and went on excursions on days off from filming in the Canary Islands.

She said: "On the days off, with her and Patty (Jenkins, director) and my double team and stunt crew, we were welcomed to a cruise and it was so cool.

It was so fun and we spent the day on this cruise together and it was incredible.

"I've always taken her from being humble and going for what you believe and dream."

Aspell is now optimistic that a young Diana will star in a potential third film Wonder Woman.

She said: "I'd love it completely, I hope I'll get the call, but you know never."

Wonder Woman 1984 is now available on request on premium film (PVOD).
