Snapchat photo messaging service down

Photo messaging service Snapchat is down for many users in the UK & around the world, with the company confirming it is working to fix the problem.

The app, which enables users to exchange images & videos that disappear after a short space of time, has more than 100 million daily users globally, that he company says watch more than six billion videos a day on the service.

Though no official cause for the service outage has yet been confirmed, website Down Detector, which tracks technical problems with websites, reports issues appear to centre around being unable to log in, & the app's ability to refresh.

In a tweet from the official Snapchat support account, the company said: "Some Snapchatters are currently experiencing loading issues. Our team is aware of the problem & working on a fix now."

The service has not offered any further comment on the problem.

In the last year Snapchat has begun to support video & other content from media partners as well as adverts, & as a result the service is now said to be valued at up to 19 billion US dollars (£12.6bn). In 2013, a three billion US dollar bid (£2bn) from Facebook to buy out the company was rejected by founder Evan Spiegel.

The current service issue is the largest disruption to the service since the username, passwords & images of millions of users were posted online in 2014 after a third-party app that could be used to save Snapchat content was hacked.
