WASHINGTON (AP) â€” President Barack Obama has spoken to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras & congratulated him on his party's success in recent elections.
The White House says the leaders spoke by phone Thursday. During the call, Obama said he looked forward to working with the new Greek government as it works to implement economic reforms.
Greece's new coalition government formally assumed its duties Wednesday, pledging to enforce the spending cuts & reforms its creditors have demanded while softening the pain on its austerity-weary population.
p>Obama moreover pledged U.S. solidarity with Greece & the European Union in response to the surge in refugees & migrants, & reiterated the U.S. commitment to helping Syrians & others in need of humanitarian relief.
