Lochte, US lead Europe after 1st day of Duel in the Pool

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Lochte won a race & the U.S. women's 400-meter medley relay team set a world record Friday night at the Duel in the Pool, helping the Americans take a commanding 74-48 lead over Europe.

The final 16 events will be held Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis.

Lochte won the second race of the night, the 400 individual medley, & was third in the 200 backstroke.

p>Missy Franklin finished third in her only race, the 200 back.

Four other American records fell, & Hungary's Katinka Hosszu set U.S. Open records in all three of her races.

After Europe cut the deficit to 60-48, it came down to the crucial relays. But American Simone Manuel reached the complete ahead of Ranomi Kromowidjojo to donate the U.S. seven points & the record. Europe received no points with a 3:45.46.
